Basic Info
Name:Katri
Bio
I'm a 23-year-old female law student and aspiring writer from Finland. Also a nature lover, a bookworm, a big dreamer, a musical theatre obsessee, a politics and history geek and a lover of all things beautiful.

I love getting obsessed with things, like books or musicals or historical time periods. The biggest obsessions of the moment are Nightwish, Harry Potter, 1776 and the American Revolution. I know L.M. Montgomery's Emily books well enough that now that I'm reading them in English (rather than Finnish translation) I keep noticing sentences and paragraphs that weren't in the translation. So maybe I'll have them memorized after a few more rereads.

For the summer, I'm earning my living working in a meat factory, fortunately the non-messy pricing department. It's not very fascinating - in fact, I hate it and will never do it again - and it's made me become a vegetarian at least temporarily, but fortunately there are only a few more weeks to live through.

I'm currently doing Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way and loving it.

I enjoy hugging trees. Trees are very huggable and hugworthy. (I would enjoy hugging people, too, but the people in my country rarely hug. Alas.)

Other things you might want to know about me: I'm bisexual. I was brought up atheist, I've never been a Christian, and currently I call myself some vague sort of a pantheist with pagan leanings. I hate bigotry of all kinds. I don't drink alcohol much at all, and while I don't actively disapprove those who do, I'm bitter about the way many of them don't want to let me do what I want. I've tried all kinds of political ideas, from being a socialist to being a moderately right-wing semi-fanatic pro-American. I'm not really sure what I'm currently - perhaps a classic liberal with environmentalist tendencies. Also, to go against the stereotype that bisexuals sleep with anything that moves, at the age of 23 I'm still an unkissed virgin. I'd like to change this before I turn 24 if I find someone I'd like to change it with.

Friending is quite allowed if you feel so inclined, just let me know (unless I know you already, in which case you don't really need to).

Favourite quotes (the list may grow and change at any time):

No books are written about proper children. They would be so dull that nobody would read them. (L.M. Montgomery)

If we did all that we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves. (Thomas Edison)

Good God, consider yourselves fortunate that you have John Adams to abuse, for no sane man would tolerate it! (John Adams in 1776)

A rebellion is always legal in the first person, such as "our rebellion." It is only in the third person - "their rebellion" - that it becomes illegal. (Dr. Benjamin Franklin in 1776)

Edward Rutledge: Mr. Adams, once we achieve independence, who do you propose would govern South Carolina?
John Adams: The people, of course.
Edward Rutledge: Which people, sir? The people of South Carolina, or the people of Massachusetts?

(from 1776; the inclusion of this quote is partly because I adore Rutledge, and because in my Euro-ambivalent [not Euro-skeptic] thoughts I like to substitute Finland for South Carolina and France or Germany for Massachusetts. No insult meant for Finland, South Carolina, France, Germany, or Massachusetts.)

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. (Albert Einstein)

I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. (Mark Twain)

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you will fall among the stars. (Les Brown)

I despise what you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it. (Voltaire)

Things seem inevitable only because people made them happen. (Noel Malcolm)

You're the storm that I believed in
And all this peace has been deceiving
I need some wind to get me sailing
So it's the storm that I believe in
(The Cardigans: You're the Storm)

Old loves they die hard
Old lies they die harder
(Nightwish: Wish I Had An Angel)

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour
(William Blake)

The irresponsive silence of the land,
The irresponsive sounding of the sea,
Speak both one message of one sense to me: -
"Aloof, aloof, we stand aloof; so stand
Thou too aloof bound with the flawless band
In inner solitude; we bind not thee.
But who from thy self-chain shall set thee free?
What heart shall touch thy heart? what hand thy hand?"
And I am sometimes proud and sometimes meek,
And sometimes I remember days of old
When fellowship seemed not so far to seek
And all the world and I seemed much less cold,
And at the rainbow's foot lay surely gold,
And hope felt strong and life itself not weak.

(Christina Georgiana Rossetti: Aloof)

Come, my friends,
'Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the paths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
It may be that the gulfs will wash us down:
It may be that we shall touch the Happy Isles,
And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and ehaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

(Alfred Lord Tennyson)
